The Nikon Group is structuring a Business Continuity Management (BCM) system covering our core operational areas of the Precision Equipment Business and the Imaging Products Business as well as the corporate headquarters function which supports such operations. A business continuity plan (BCP) is being formulated which will ensure the rapid restoration of the above-mentioned core businesses in the event of a large-scale disaster such as a major earthquake impacting the Tokyo area.
As shown in the following chart, the time needed until business recovery varies considerably depending on whether or not a BCP is in place. For this reason, having a BCP and building a BCM system makes it possible to minimize losses in the event a company encounters an emergency and to earn stakeholders' trust in company management.
The basic policy of the BCM system is to respond to an emergency in a way that meets the recovery time objective (RTO) determined in the BCP. Such responses include physical measures such as ensuring earthquake resistance as well as education and training to ensure that efficient activities can be carried out in the event of an emergency. Also, a PDCA cycle can be implemented for the BCM to implement actual improvements needed for the existing BCP, as made apparent through implementing such responses.
* "PDCA" stands for the "Plan," "Do," "Check," and "Action" cycle of business activities.
