Nikon established its Social Contribution Section in April 2007. Since then Nikon has adopted a serious stance toward social contributions in a distinctively Nikon manner. The Nikon Scholarship Program in Thailand is one activity on which we focus. To commemorate the company's 90th anniversary, Nikon established the Nikon Scholarship Program to support the education of young people in Thailand. This program will support junior and senior high school students, and university students to be able to receive a basic education. It will also support selected university students who wish to come to Japan to pursue higher education in graduate schools. Nikon expects that the program will contribute to the development of human resources that will build bridges between Japan and Thailand.
Nikon has maintained positive relations with Thailand over the years. For example, it set up Nikon (Thailand) Co. Ltd. in Ayuthaya. Although Thailand is becoming more affluent, the country still faces many challenges. Nikon looked for ways in which it might be able to assist Thailand, and concluded that it was important to help develop human resources that would support the country. The company decided that supporting the education system would be of most benefit to Thailand's future. Therefore Nikon decided to establish a scholarship program.

This program is comprised of two scholarships. The Nikon Shanti Scholarship is designed to support students attending junior high school, high school and university. The other is the Nikon Chulalongkorn Scholarship that supports Thai students studying in graduate schools in Japan.
The Nikon Shanti Scholarship is implemented with the cooperation of two organizations: The Shanti Volunteer Association, a Japanese group with experience in social-contribution activities in Thailand, and Thailand's Sikkha Asia Foundation. About 150 junior high school and high school students, and about 20 university students, are awarded this scholarship each year.

|---|---|---|---|
| Junior high school and high school students | 25 | 6 | About 150 |
| University students | 5 | 4 | About 20 |
The Nikon Chulalongkorn Scholarship is implemented in cooperation with Chulalongkorn University, a top-ranked educational institution in Thailand with a proud history. Current Chulalongkorn University students and alumni are short-listed and then selected as recipients of scholarships. The program supports living expenses and tuition for graduate education in Japan.

A characteristic of the Nikon Scholarship Program is that in addition to supporting basic education, it provides an opportunity to study in Japan where recipients can receive advanced education. With the Nikon Scholarship program, young people who have few educational opportunities can access basic education, and they may attain advanced education depending on ability and effort. With the assistance of this program, a student graduating from junior high school in Thailand might after some years attend graduate school in Japan. Nikon aims to contribute to Thai society through these two scholarships.
