Lens-Polishing—techniques for polishing large-diameter lenses for digital single-lens reflex cameras

The lens-polishing process

  • 1.A G-plate is placed on the polishing machine.

    • *The "G" in G-plate stands for "gauge," in the sense that it represents a reference surface.
  • 2.The G-plate is used to form the polishing surface on the polishing plate.

  • 3.The polishing plate is placed on the polishing machine.

  • 4.The lens is placed in the lens holder.

  • 5.This is then placed on the polishing machine.

  • 6.Various settings are made. These include the polishing pressure, the rotation speeds of the polishing machine and the polishing time.

  • 7.The lens-polishing begins.

  • 8.After the polishing has been completed, the lens is allowed to cool so that the heat generated by the friction is dispelled, and the precision of the shape of the lens is then checked using a test plate*.

    • *A test plate represents the standard surface shape of the lens.
