As named by the Historical Camera Committee of the JCII, Nikon PRONEA S, F100, and COOLPIX900 among "The Historical Japanese Cameras of 1998"

The "Historical Camera Committee", a review group established within the JCII (Japan Camera and Optical Instruments Inspection and Testing Institute --- Ichibancho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), has chosen its "Historical Japanese Cameras" of 1998.
A total of 24 cameras were selected --- 13 from the film camera category, and 11 digital (still) cameras.

Receiving recognition for Nikon were the Advanced Photo System^TM AF SLR "PRONEA S" and 35mm(135)-format AF SLR "F100", along with the digital "COOLPIX 900 (E900)".

"Historical Japanese cameras" serve as bookmarks in the history of japanese camera development.
Cameras which are considered significant in some regard are chosen by the "Historical Camera Committee", composed of specialists and people of learning and experience.

All new cameras released within the year are eligible to be evaluated and chosen, based on factors such as the first use of a new technology, and popularity among consumers.

The reasoning behind the committee's selection of the three(3) Nikon cameras is as follows :

Nikon PRONEA S :: Small Advanced Photo SystemTM SLR camera sporting a unique design.
Nikon F100 :: Offers well-balanced performance; achieved market popularity as an extension of the Nikon F5.
Nikon COOLPIX 900 :: Optical performance is emphasized; became popular among consumers.

Most "Historical Japanese Cameras" designated in past years are being stored and exhibited at the JCII Camera Museum ( Ichibancho, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo ) , which is run by the JCII.
