Nikon Corporation (Teruo SHIMAMURA, President & COO) intends to complete the integration of ISO14001 certification for all domestic plants and the head office by October 2005. Nikon will also design and implement a company-wide environmental management system (EMS).
Beginning in 1998, each and every Nikon Corporation plant in Japan has earned ISO14001 certification and aggressively promoted environmental preservation activities. Recently, prompted by increasingly stringent environmental regulations such as the RoHS directive enacted in the European Union, it has become necessary for Nikon management to adopt a stance of enhanced environmental awareness. Our activities will directly reflect the views of top management, as we will develop measures company-wide which adhere to environmental policies. To optimize the effectiveness of these activities, Nikon will fully consolidate its independent ISO14001 certifications and employ an EMS across the company.
The first step taken in Nikon's pursuit of fully integrated ISO14001 certification was to submit the Ohi (Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo) and Yokohama (Yokohama-shi, Kanagawa) plants for joint certification. An investigation was conducted by BVQI Japan, an external certification body, and the integrated certification of the two plants was officially approved on October 27, 2004.
The same procedure will take place for Nikon's head office (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo) and the three remaining plants in the near future, and complete consolidation is scheduled for October 2005.
Once we have achieved domestic integration, we will broaden our EMS implementation activities from the manufacturing locations in Japan to our overseas production bases, with the goal of group-wide integration and the creation of a global EMS.
