TOKYO - Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the release of a number of new COOLPIX compact digital cameras. From the high-performance and multi-functional P series, which supports full-scale photography, comes the COOLPIX P610; from the S series, which combines advanced functions with simple operation, come the COOLPIX S9900 and COOLPIX S7000; and from the L series, with which the functions and simple operation that make using a digital camera fun are emphasized, come the COOLPIX L840 and COOLPIX L340.

The P610 is a model that supports full-scale photography with a 60x optical zoom (up to 120x*1 when Dynamic Fine Zoom is used) NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 24 mm to super-telephoto 1440 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format), Dual Detect Optical VR, which offers the best compensation for camera shake—equivalent to a 5.0-stop*2 increase in shutter speed—available from a Nikon compact digital camera, and has a shooting time lag of approximately 0.12 s*3. The P610 is also one of the smallest*4 cameras in the 60x or higher optical zoom class, and offers better basic performance and more advanced functions than ever before with a high-performance NIKKOR lens that utilizes a super ED lens element for superior chromatic aberration compensation. It is also the first COOLPIX camera to be equipped with an electronic viewfinder with a built-in eye sensor.

The S9900 is a high-performance, multi-functional model equipped with features such as a 30x optical zoom (up to 60x*1 when Dynamic Fine Zoom is used) NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 25 mm to super-telephoto 750 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format), a 3-in., approximately 921k-dot vari-angle TFT LCD monitor that increases possibilities for imaging expression with support for shooting from a wide variety of angles, high-speed AF that ensures certain capture of decisive moments, and a location data function with built-in world map that supports GPS (with A-GPS*5), GLONASS, and QZSS. The elegant, orthodox design and adoption of a command dial, along with a completely new design of the camera body and operational controls, support the enjoyment of full-scale photography.

The S7000 is an elegant and stylish model with the world's slimmest and lightest*6 body, which makes it easy to take anywhere. It is equipped with a high-performance 20x optical zoom (up to 40x*1 when Dynamic Fine Zoom is used) NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 25 mm to super-telephoto 500 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format), as well as 4-axis Hybrid VR (vibration reduction) . In addition, the camera's backside illumination CMOS sensor and effective pixel count of 16.0-million pixels achieve superior image quality. In addition to excellent basic performance, the S7000 is equipped with new movie functions, such as Time-lapse Movie function and Short Movie Show mode, which allow users to enjoy unique forms of expression while leaving everything up to the camera.

The L840 is a model that offers simple operation and superior image quality. It is equipped with a 38x optical zoom (up to 76x*1 when Dynamic Fine Zoom is used) NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 22.5 mm to super-telephoto 855 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format). The L840 is also equipped with features and functions that enable more comfortable and enjoyable shooting, including a 3-in. high-definition tilting TFT LCD monitor that makes shooting from a variety of angles fun, a large grip that fits easily and comfortably in the hand, as well as simple and intuitive operation.

The L340 is a model that makes capturing beautiful images easy with simple operations. It packs a 28x optical zoom (up to 56x*1 when Dynamic Fine Zoom is used) NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 22.5 mm to super-telephoto 630 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format) in one of the smallest bodies in its class. It also offers a large grip that fits easily and comfortably in the hand, simple and intuitive operation, a vibration reduction (VR) function that offers excellent compensation for camera shake, and a large, high-definition LCD monitor.

In addition, all models (except the L340) offer support for NFC, which enables simple connection to a Wi-Fi® network by simply touching the camera to an NFC-enabled smart device*7, as well as recording of high-definition 1920x1080 60p/60i movies capable of smooth expression of movement made possible with a high-performance vibration reduction (VR) function.
What's more, the cameras stimulate the user's creativity by making shooting more fun and providing an environment for communications with features such as the new Time-lapse Movie*8 function and Short Movie Show*9 mode, which enable creation of impressive movies, as well as shooting functions such as the Scene Auto Selector mode, and a variety of functions for editing images, including Special Effects and Glamour Retouch.

COOLPIX P610 Primary Features

1. A high-performance 60x (up to 120x* with Dynamic Fine Zoom) optical zoom NIKKOR lens constructed with a super ED lens element

The P610 is equipped with an ultra high-power 60x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle
24 mm to super-telephoto 1440 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format). A super ED lens element that offers excellent image-formation performance and superior compensation for chromatic aberration has been adopted with the optics for sharp and clear rendering, even with super-telephoto shooting. In addition to Dynamic Fine Zoom, which enables 120x* zoom with which resolution is preserved in the digital zoom range, the camera also supports powerful macro photography of subjects as close as approximately 1 cm to the lens.
The P610 also offers Moon and Bird-watching scene modes. Use of these scene modes allows users to leave all of the work up to the camera when capturing such subjects, with which exposure settings can be difficult to choose and apply, for simple and enjoyable super-telephoto photography.

Dual Detect Optical VR that provides compensation for camera shake equivalent to a 5.0-stop* increase in shutter speed
With adoption of the new Dual Detect Optical VR, the P610 achieves the highest level of camera shake compensation, equivalent to a 5.0-stop* increase in shutter speed, available with a Nikon compact digital camera. This function calculates the amount of camera shake with even greater precision with a new VR algorithm that uses two types of information with calculation—camera shake information detected by the angular velocity sensor, and information regarding the direction and amount of camera shake (motion vector) calculated based on image information. This significantly increases the accuracy of camera shake compensation.

2. High-speed continuous shooting and a shooting time lag that ensure certain capture of any photo opportunity

The P610 offers even better basic performance than the P600 with a shooting time lag of approximately 0.12 s*1 and high-speed continuous shooting capable of capturing up to approximately 7 shots with a single burst of shooting at approximately 7 fps*2. These specifications mean that the camera is able to respond quickly to sudden or unexpected photo opportunities, ensuring certain capture of the desired moment.

3. The first COOLPIX camera to be equipped with an electronic viewfinder that automatically changes the shooting method in accordance with conditions

The P610 is the first COOLPIX camera ever to be equipped with a 0.2-in., approximately 921k-dot electronic viewfinder with approximately 100% frame coverage. Adoption of an eye sensor enables automatic switching from monitor framing to framing using the electronic viewfinder by simply bringing the camera up to the eye. The shooting (framing) method can also be changed manually by pressing the camera's monitor button.

4. Superior operation that supports comfortable shooting

The S9900 is equipped with a high-power 30x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 25 mm to super-telephoto 750 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format). In addition to Dynamic Fine Zoom, which enables 60x*1 zoom with which resolution is preserved in the digital zoom range, the camera also supports powerful macro photography of subjects as close as approximately 1 cm to the lens.
What's more, zoom photography with which blur is controlled is made possible with a high-performance vibration reduction (VR) function (for still images) that combines lens-shift and electronic vibration reduction for camera shake compensation equivalent to a 4.0-stop*2 increase in shutter speed.

2. High-performance AF that enables fast and accurate focusing

The S9900 is equipped with Pre-focus AF, with which the camera focuses automatically in situations such as when camera movement is detected, immediately after a face is recognized, and immediately after a subject's face is lost. More certain shooting is also possible with quick focusing on the intended subject in approximately 0.14 s* at the maximum wide-angle position and approximately 0.62 s* at the maximum telephoto position.

3. An elegant design well suited to a camera

A functional design well suited to a camera has been achieved with adoption of an elastomer on the camera body that looks and feels like leather, and provides an elegant appearance and supports a firm and steady hold on the camera with shooting. The S9900 is also equipped with a variety of features that make full-scale photography fun and easy, including a command dial effective for applying flexible program, aperture, and shutter speed settings, and eyelets on both sides of the camera that enable attachment of neck straps. The S9900 will be available in two chic colors: black and titanium silver.

COOLPIX S7000 Primary Features

1. A high-performance 20x (up to 40x* with Dynamic Fine Zoom) optical zoom NIKKOR lens

The S7000 is equipped with a high-power 20x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 25 mm to super-telephoto 500 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format), and achieves sharp rendering at all focal lengths. It supports powerful macro photography of subjects as close as 1 cm to the lens, as well as zoom photography using Dynamic Fine Zoom, which enables 40x* zoom with which resolution is preserved.

2. The world's lightest* and slimmest body with an elegant design that achieves the look and feel of a full-scale camera

Despite its high-power zoom lens and multitude of functions, the S7000's elegant body, with which great attention has been paid to even the smallest details, is the world's lightest* camera. It weighs approximately 161 g, and measures approximately 27.4 mm in depth (approx. 19.6 mm at its slimmest portion). It fits comfortably in a pocket, and demonstrates superior portability, even when traveling. It is available in a variety of colors: black, white, gold, and pink.

3. An effective pixel count of 16.0-million pixels*, and equipped with a backside illumination CMOS sensor that performs well in dark surroundings

Adoption of a backside illumination CMOS image sensor enables rich expression of tones with little noise when shooting at higher sensitivities. In addition, the NIKKOR lens, which offers superior optical performance, and the EXPEED C2 image-processing system, which effectively reduces noise, ensures captures of sharp and clear images, even with shooting in dimly lit or dark surroundings.

COOLPIX L840 Primary Features

Despite its small size (approx. 113.5 x 78.3 x 96.0mm), the L840 is equipped with a high-power 38x optical zoom NIKKOR lens that covers the wide-angle 22.5 mm to super-telephoto 855 mm angles of view (equivalent focal lengths in 35mm [135] format). In addition to Dynamic Fine Zoom, which enables 76x* zoom with which resolution is preserved in the digital zoom range, the camera also supports powerful macro photography of subjects as close as approximately 1 cm to the lens. What's more, Moon and Bird-watching scene modes have been added so that users can more easily enjoy super-telephoto photography. Use of these scene modes allows users to leave all of the work up to the camera when photographing subjects, such as the moon or wild birds, with which exposure settings can be difficult to choose and apply.

The L340 makes the most of the superior agility of compact digital cameras with one of the most compact bodies in its class. Despite this, it is equipped with a 28x high-power optical zoom lens. This allows users of the camera to easily enjoy super-telephoto photography while traveling, or at special events.

3. A large and clear, 3-inch, approximately 460k-dot TFT LCD monitor

The large LCD monitor is equipped with an anti-reflection coating and 5-level brightness adjustment function for superior visibility while framing or playing back images, or viewing camera menus, even when out-of-doors on bright, sunny days.

Common Features

1. 3-in., approximately 921k-dot TFT LCD monitor that supports imaging expression from a variety of angles (P610, S9900, L840)

The cameras are equipped with a 3-inch, approximately 921k-dot, movable TFT LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle. A vari-angle monitor has been adopted for the P610 and S9900, and a tilting monitor has been adopted for the L840. All three of these cameras support recording of photos and movies from a variety of angles, from low to high. The sharp and clear LCD monitors consume very little power, and are equipped with an anti-reflection coating and 5-level brightness adjustment function for superior visibility while framing or playing back images, or viewing camera menus, even when out-of-doors on bright, sunny days.

2. GPS/GLONASS/QZSS support (P610, S9900) and built-in world map (S9900)

GPS/GLONASS/QZSS support (P610, S9900)
The P610 and S9900 support GPS (with A-GPS*), the Global Navigation Satellite System (GLONASS), and the Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS). This enables faster and more accurate recording of shooting location data (latitude and longitude) with images, even in places where positioning was previously difficult, such as between buildings. In addition, support for A-GPS* files enables immediate GPS positioning as soon as the cameras are turned on.

GPS that supports POI* display (P610, S9900), a built-in electronic compass (S9900), and built-in world map display (S9900)
The cameras support display of points of interest (POI)* for adding the names of places where photos are taken to images captured with the camera. In addition, shooting location data acquired with the high-performance GPS/GLONASS/QZSS function, along with the direction in which the camera is pointed recorded using the built-in electronic compass, can also be recorded with images and displayed on a world map* in the camera monitor. Shooting locations (up to 30) can be registered using the Save Location option with map display.
In addition, information that is useful with outdoor use, such as latitude, longitude, altitude, atmospheric pressure, and heading, can be confirmed with a quick glance at the monitor display by pressing the map button located on the side of the camera.

Log function (P610, S9900)
When the log function is enabled, the route of movement is recorded even when the camera is not in use or is turned off. This feature is optimal for tracking your route while hiking or on vacation.

3. NFC support, which makes sharing images via Wi-Fi® even easier (P610, S9900, S7000, L840)

NFC support enables easy Wi-Fi® connection by simply touching the camera to a smart device (running Android 4.0 or later) equipped with the NFC function. This allows users to immediately transfer images they have just captured to a smart device, even when they are outdoors, from which they can be posted to SNSs for sharing with family and friends. In addition, the camera's Wi-Fi® button also makes Wi-Fi® connection even easier when smart devices not equipped with NFC are used. Smart devices can also be used to take pictures remotely, zoom in or out, and enable the self-timer, capabilities that are convenient when taking group photos in which the user is included.

4. New functions for recording beautiful high-definition movies exhibiting little blur, and preserving memories in impressive ways (P610, S9900, S7000, L840)

The cameras support recording of high-definition 1920x1080 60p/60i movies capable of smooth expression of movement made possible with a high-performance 5-axis Hybrid VRthat uses both lens-shift and electronic VR for recording of beautiful movies in which blur has been effectively reduced (the S7000 and L840 are equipped with 4-axis Hybrid VR; the P610 is equipped with an Active* VR option)
The cameras also offer a Time-lapse Movie function (not available with the L840) with which the user need simply select a scene type, and the camera automatically applies the optimal shooting interval for that type of scene. Still images are then captured at the specified interval and combined to create a 10-second movie that dynamically expresses familiar scenes such as the setting sun, clouds passing overhead, and urban bustle. They are also equipped with a Short Movie Show mode (not available with the P610) that creates short 30-second movies by automatically combining the specified number of movie clips. Special effects and one of four background music tracks can be applied to movies, allowing users to preserve impressive movies of highlights from vacations or everyday life.
