What is the Shiroishi-Zao Eco Forum?

The Shiroishi-Zao Eco Forum was established voluntarily in 2000 by seven local companies certified under ISO 14001. The forum provides a platform for sharing information, with the aim of encouraging environmental cooperation and contributing to the local community. The Shiroishi-Zao Eco Forum has since expanded across Miyagi Prefecture, which now has 17 eco forums involving approximately 100 companies. The forum suspended exchange activities from fiscal year 2020 through fiscal year 2023 due to COVID-19 and resumed activities in fiscal year 2024.

Main Activities

The forum visits elementary schools in Shiroishi City and Zao Town to teach students about familiar environmental issues, including global warming and waste. Members also jointly collect small quantities of waste, including used fluorescent lamps and batteries, to reduce costs and CO₂ emissions from transportation. Other activities include environmental study sessions for member companies, networking events for facility maintenance personnel, tours of factories operated by companies with strong environmental practices, and exchanges with eco forums in other regions. These activities aim to enhance environmental efforts at member companies and foster more active eco forum activities. Members also participate in local environmental events to raise environmental awareness among residents.
