Changing Needs in Video Production

The rapid growth of video content is transforming the environment surrounding video production.

To meet these diverse needs, Nikon and RED have combined their respective technologies to create Z CINEMA, a new series of cinema products. The series is designed to deliver high-quality solutions across a wide range of production environments, from individual creators and small teams to professionals.

Nikon & RED: Taking on the Cinema Market Together

So, what led Nikon to take on this challenge alongside RED?

Nikon had long been advancing the video capabilities and performance of its mirrorless cameras, but had yet to make a full-scale entry into the cinema market. Breaking into a market that is centered around professional users and requires deep industry expertise called for a new approach.

A major breakthrough came in 2024, when RED joined the Nikon Group.

RED is a cinema camera manufacturer trusted on production sets around the world, including Hollywood productions, and has remained at the forefront of filmmaking. While Nikon had already begun developing cinema cameras of its own, RED's addition to the Group significantly accelerated Nikon's entry into the cinema market.

Following RED's addition to the Nikon Group, the two companies deepened their collaboration and launched Z CINEMA.

However, the collaboration was not without its challenges. Differences in national and corporate cultures sometimes led to differing opinions and communication difficulties. But what kept development moving forward was a shared spirit of being customer-centric and disruptive.

By 2025, the Z CINEMA lineup included RED's V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount, KOMODO-X Z Mount, and V-RAPTOR XE, alongside Nikon's first cinema camera, the Nikon ZR. In just around a year and a half, four products were brought to market, strengthening the companies' presence in the cinema industry.

The Core Technologies Behind Z CINEMA

The defining feature of Z CINEMA is the way it combines the technologies and expertise Nikon and RED have each cultivated to create new products for the cinema market.

RED's strengths lie in the technologies and expertise it has developed through years of experience in professional filmmaking, including its proprietary R3D RAW format, advanced color science, and efficient cinema workflows. Color science is the technology behind how images are rendered, while a cinema workflow refers to the production environment that seamlessly connects each stage of the process, from shooting and editing through to finishing. This close attention to the needs of production teams is one of the reasons RED has earned its recognition around the world.

On the other hand, Nikon contributes more than a century of expertise in applied optics, along with fast, precise autofocus and cameras renowned for their reliability. The ability to deliver dependable performance even in challenging shooting environments has earned Nikon the support of photographers worldwide.

Bringing together the strengths of both companies, including RED's RAW format and color science, alongside Nikon's technologies and expertise, is the Nikon ZR. Launched in October 2025, this all-in-one compact cinema camera was developed with feedback from users across the cinema industry.

At the heart of the ZR is R3D NE, a new video recording file format developed specifically for Nikon cameras. Incorporating RED's color science, it opens the door to distinctive cinematic visual expression.

This allows the ZR to meet a broad range of needs, from video production by individuals and small teams to full-scale filmmaking. It is also designed to be used alongside RED cameras, giving it the potential to become a true game changer in the cinema industry.

Meanwhile, RED's V-RAPTOR XE, which joined the Z CINEMA lineup in September 2025, inherits the performance of RED's flagship V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount while offering a carefully selected set of essential features for high-end video production. Delivering top-level image quality at a more accessible price point, it expands the range of options available to users.

Z CINEMA not only opens the door to professional filmmaking, but also has the potential to support creators as they pursue increasingly advanced forms of visual expression. This ability to grow in line with creators' ambitions is what sets Z CINEMA apart.

The Future of Visual Expression

The collaboration between Nikon and RED is only just beginning.

The two companies will continue to enhance the value of their products through firmware updates. They also plan to further expand the Z CINEMA lineup, including the development of cinema lenses recently announced by Nikon.

RED's technologies and expertise developed through its work in the cinema industry, combined with Nikon's long-standing expertise in applied optics and camera development, are helping to expand the possibilities of video production.
