New-dimensional optical performance that leads to next-generation image creation
New-dimensional optical performance is realized with the Z-mount system. Utilizing long-accumulated knowledge and uncompromising quality in the manufacture of cameras, Nikon's Z-mount mirrorless camera system supports the imaging expression of photographers that leads to next-generation creation.
It is necessary to convey as much light as possible to an image sensor through the lens in order to provide the highest-quality images. The larger the inner diameter of the mount, the more advantageous it will be for image quality. However, a larger diameter makes the camera and interchangeable lenses bulkier.
Nikon arrived at the ultimate solution by using the combination of a 55-mm inner diameter and 16-mm flange focal distance. With these specifications, flexibility in lens design has been greatly improved, enabling the pursuit of higher brightness, resolution, focus accuracy and bokeh characteristics more intensively. Maximizing these advantages, the Z-mount system realizes new-dimensional optical performance, compactness and superior operability.
Hybrid AF system
The hybrid autofocus system with focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast AF can be used for both stills and movies. With the newly developed focal-plane phase-detection AF system, both AF performance and image quality are improved in a well-balanced way by widely locating AF pixels throughout the image sensor. As a result, the Z 7 covers an extremely wide area of approximately 90% vertical/horizontal with 493 focus points (273 with the Z 6)*. For the Z 50, high coverage of 87% vertical and 85% horizontal is attained.
Furthermore, highly accurate Eye-detection AF is available in still shooting with which the subject's eyes are kept focused even when there is an object in front of the subject's face or if the subject keeps moving.

EVF (Electronic Viewfinder)
Because mirrorless cameras magnify a small image display panel using an optical lens and display it on the viewfinder, the displayed image is likely to be distorted or flowing in the peripheral areas of the frame specifically at high magnification where distortion correction is difficult. With the Z 7 and Z 6, an original high-performance optical system containing aspherical lens elements, high-refractive index resins and anti-reflection coatings is employed. This ensures a clear and bright field of view with minimal distortion across the entire frame and a natural view almost equivalent to that of an optical viewfinder.
