Collaborating with Local Companies
through the Shiroishi-Zao Eco Forum

What is the Shiroishi-Zao Eco Forum?

The Shiraishi-Zao Eco Forum was established voluntarily in 2000 by seven local ISO 14001-certified companies. The forum serves as a platform for information exchange focused on mutual environmental cooperation and contributions to local communities. The Shiraishi-Zao Eco Forum has inspired the launch of 17 Eco-Forums in Miyagi Prefecture, with around 100 total companies now participating. The forum paused all regional exchange activities from fiscal year 2020 to fiscal year 2023 due to COVID-19 but resumed activities in fiscal year 2024.

Main Activities

Forum members visit elementary schools in Shiroishi City and Zao Town to deliver lessons on local environmental issues, including global warming and waste management. Members also work together to reduce costs and CO2 emissions during transportation by jointly collecting small amounts of waste, including used fluorescent lamps and dry cell batteries. Further activities include study sessions on environmental themes among member companies, networking events for facility maintenance staff, site visits to exemplary environmental facilities, and exchange programs with other regional Eco Forums. These efforts aim to enhance each company’s environmental initiatives and invigorate Forum activities. In addition, we participate in local environmental events and contribute to environmental awareness among prefectural residents and citizens.

Fiscal Year 2024 Activities

The Shiraishi-Zao Eco Forum hosted an environmental booth at the Zao Town Industrial Festival. The booth featured a panel exhibit on the environmental impact of food, highlighting the links between common food ingredients and issues such as overexploitation of resources and greenhouse gas emissions to emphasize the importance of daily consideration of the relationship between food and environmental issues. The forum also organized a cleanup event along Route 4 in Shiroishi City, near the border of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
